The GLP-1 market has gotten out of hand.
In its truest form, these medications treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. According to survey data from KFF, a source for health policy research and polls, about 1 in 8 adults in the United States has used a GLP-1 drug like Ozempic or Mounjaro, and about 2 in 5 adults took GLP-1 drugs solely to lose weight.
There’s an obesity epidemic in America, and for those struggling with weight loss who want as assist from a GLP-1 receptor, I’m here for it. What I have a difficult time understanding is the rebranding of these weight loss drugs for people with health concerns into “vitamins” or “wellness treatments” for people who don’t need to lose weight, and if they do, it’s five to ten pounds of water weight. The latest to lean into the cash grab? None other than The Kardashians.
