Gardenia Brewery’s Mexican Lager is Aflame with the Lush, Psychedelic Look of Old Tarot Cards

As I’ve mentioned a lot recently, Chicano designers are unequivocally killing it right now, and I’m always excited to see work that I know comes from a Mexican studio or creative. Their designs are often colorful and highly detailed, but even the simpler, more understated work is rife with texture and rich storytelling.

The illustrator Joaco is a great example, known for wavy, intricate, Jodorowsky-esque psychedelia. His work for Gardenia Brewery is almost literally a rich tapestry, considering the whole design is something I’d be thrilled to hang on my wall. The can’s imagery is as lush and colorful as an old tarot card, flanked with flowers, flames, fantastical beasts, and the grainy textures of a lovingly-maintained vintage print. The more I look at this design, the easier it is to get lost in it.
