Over the Wave Kombucha is a Refreshing Tribute to Surf Culture

781Studio‘s design for Over the Wave Kombucha is as refreshing as the drink itself. Drawing inspiration from Indonesian surf culture, the vibrant, hand-drawn illustrations and sun-faded colors capture the laid-back vibe of a day at the beach.

This Kombucha originates in Lombok, Indonesia, where its paradise beaches attract hundreds of surfers eager to ride the waves.

When you surf, you spend a lot of time under the sun and in the salty water, so once you come out of the sea, the first thing you seek is to refresh yourself with a drink that hydrates you. What better way to do this than with something artisanal and flavored with local fruit?

The background illustrations of each variant are inspired by the surfers themselves, who, with their laid-back outfits always ready for the board, exude a cool and colorful vibe. This is reflected in the contrasting yet slightly sun- and water-faded color harmony. The landscapes also provided fluidity in the strokes and the magical combination of shapes and textures.

The typography clearly references the style surfers use to mark their boards, caps, bags, helmets, and even bikes – hand script.

The shoot was the perfect ending for this project, where we patiently waited on a Kuta beach for the surfers to come out thirsty and try this new Kombucha, allowing us to capture the product in its natural setting: surfing, the beach, and the sea.
