Daniel Arsham Creates New Version Of Hot Wheel’s Classic Rally Wheel Case For ‘Creations’ Collection

Thanks to this summer’s blockbuster starring Margot Robbie, toy manufacturer Mattel’s Barbie franchise has recently received plenty of attention. But that isn’t the only arrow in the toy maker’s quiver; Mattel also makes the beloved Hot Wheels line. Since 1968, Mattel has also offered scale model cars to delight that part of a kid’s brain that goes wild over cool stuff on wheels.

Hot Wheels are already highly collectible, but its Creations series sets out to make limited, artistic expressions of tiny toy cars designed to be collected by adults and not played with by children.

For the latest inclusion to Hot Wheel’s Creations collection, Mattel has partnered with artist Daniel Arsham, and the first items to drop in this collaboration include a pair of classic cars and a reinterpretation of the first car-hauling Rally Wheel case from 1968.

This Hot Wheels Creation line begins with Arsham’s version of the Hot Wheels Rodger Dodger, based on a 1973 Dodge Charger with a supercharged motor. The other car debuting in the collection is Daniel Arsham’s version of the Porsche 930 Turbo, otherwise known as the “Widowmaker.” A car carrier based on the original 1963 Hot Wheels Super Rally Wheel case is also part of the brand’s Creations collaboration with Arsham.

All items feature Ashram’s signature, “eroded” ceramic style. Instead of stone, however, the little toy cars and carriers are made out of resin called “Silkstone,” which simulates porcelain and Mattel uses for its Barbie Fashion Model collection, also intended for adult collectors.“Mattel Creations developed creative ways to deliver my vision by thinking outside of the box and experimenting with new materials and processes,” said Arsham in a press release. “This is the first time Silkstone has been used on a Hot Wheels model, and my first time working with this material, making it a historic moment for both of us.”

According to Mattel, this is also the first time its signature 1968 Super Rally Wheel case has been reinterpreted and reimagined. Daniel Arsham’s take on the car case has room for eight cars placed inside display cases.

The Hot Wheels X Daniel Arsham Creations collection will be available for sale on October 27, 2023.
