Goodnature encapsulates the spirit of sustainability in orange packaging. Born from the fallen leaves of orange groves, we embrace the cradle-to-cradle philosophy for all living beings.
Beyond its primary role as packaging, our product comes 100% from nature and goes back 100% to nature. After serving its primary purpose, it transforms into a natural fertilizer when returned to the earth. By nourishing the soil, it symbolizes the cycle of life and renewal.
With the belief in contributing positively to life on Earth, our commitment goes beyond environmental consciousness, from the living beings around us to the vitality of the place of origin. Crafted by the skilled hands of the local community in Fang, the northern part of Thailand, we bring value back to our roots.
Further, the packaging has an additional function as an indicator of the orange’s freshness and ideal consumption time. The color of the leaf reflects the age of the orange and guides consumers for optimal taste. Green leaves signify freshness within the first 5 days, guaranteeing the freshness. Yellow leaves emerge after 10 days, indicating the orange is at its prime and ready for consumption, offering the best taste. As the orange matures, brown leaves at 30 days signal that the peak flavor may diminish. Finally, within 365 days, the packaging returns to the soil, becoming a natural fertilizer. The organic composition of the packaging also ensures a seamless integration into the soil, enriching it with valuable nutrients and fostering new growth.
The design concept of our orange packaging is a visual ode to the intricate cycle of life, elegantly embodying the form of a circular, connected eight/infinity shape: it mirrors the continuous ebb and flow in nature, thus its inherent renewal. We also take inspiration from the ecosystem of Preechafang orchard in Northern Thailand which abstains from harmful chemicals. Similarly, our packaging material and surface take cues from the resilient structure of ant nests which only exist in a chemical-free yard. This unique inspiration symbolizes the balance and safety found in an environment that nurtures both the orange tree and its surrounding life while benefiting the consumers.
Goodnature’s design represents a full circle-of-life approach, embodying harmony, sustainability, and respect for the interconnections in life. It’s not just packaging; it’s our holistic commitment to life itself.
“The details that make impacts beyond the environment”
Our design concept goes beyond traditional packaging, promoting responsible sourcing, and waste reduction, supporting local communities, educating consumers, and inspiring eco-friendly practices in both design and agriculture.
- Cradle-to-Cradle Philosophy: Utilizes fallen orange grove leaves, considering the entire lifecycle from sourcing to return to nature, minimizing waste and environmental impact.
- Biodegradability and Natural Fertilization: 100% natural packaging transforms into fertilizer, reducing landfill burden, and actively enriching soil for ecosystem health and biodiversity support.
- Renewable Resource Utilization: Taps into fallen leaves as a renewable resource, promoting responsible resource management and minimizing the need for additional raw materials, reducing overall environmental impact.
- Support for Local Communities: Crafted by the local community in Fang, it emphasizes social sustainability, supporting local artisans, and fostering a sense of community and connection to the place of origin.
- Consumer Education and Reduced Food Waste: Packaging serves as an indicator of orange freshness, guiding consumers on optimal consumption times, enhancing the consumer experience, and contributing to a reduction in food waste.
- O% polyurethane and plastic: Replaces traditional environmentally harmful foam with 100% leaf-based material, offering better cushioning against impacts and promoting environmental sustainability. Also, it ensures breathability for the oranges even when wrapped, maintaining freshness and quality throughout storage and transportation.
- Circular Design Symbolism: Visual representation as a circular, connected eight/infinity shape symbolizes the continuous cycle of life and renewal, reinforcing the importance of sustainability and interconnectedness, encouraging a mindset that transcends the product itself.
“The details of the materials”
The entire packaging is a testament to a profound commitment to nature, from the inventive use of orange leaves to the manual crafting of each component, ensuring a packaging that seamlessly integrates with the environment. With a remarkable 0% reliance on industrial facilities, it stands as a beacon of sustainability, embodying a genuine commitment to the environment, promoting responsible practices, and supporting local communities through handcrafted production.
1. Innermost Tray: Crafted from a blend of fallen orange leaves, bound together with natural rice glue, offering a perfect combination of rigidity and flexibility.
Hand-pressed into wooden molds during non-harvest seasons, allowing for meticulous shaping.
2. Outer Tray:
The completed inner tray is coated with fresh fallen orange leaves using natural rice glue, then pressed onto real wooden veneers for an additional shaping round.
Air-dried until the adhesive sets, becoming ready for packing oranges daily during the harvest season, with surface leaves indicating optimal consumption periods.
3. Packaging Bag:
Made from “saa” paper sourced from local mulberry trees in Chiang Mai, each bag is hand-cut and sewn by local workers, contributing to community livelihoods.
The bags are screen-printed manually with natural colors, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship.
“Circular design philosophy creates endless end-of-life opportunity to the world”
Furthermore, by designing it to be compostable, it’s allowed to seamlessly integrate into agricultural practices or personal plant growing at home. Whether used in agricultural operations or by individuals cultivating plants in their gardens, the composting feature ensures a sustainable and eco-friendly disposal option. This aligns with the principles of a circular economy, where resources are utilized efficiently, and waste is minimized by ensuring that every component of the product serves a beneficial purpose throughout its entire life cycle.
By allowing the packaging to seamlessly transition into fertilizer and be composted, the design not only minimizes environmental impact but actively contributes to the renewal and nourishment of the ecosystem. This innovative approach underscores the commitment to sustainability and showcases how thoughtful design can turn what would traditionally be considered waste into a valuable asset for the planet and creating life.
