KFC Launches a Pop-Up ‘Chizzeria’ and There’s Even a ‘Chizza’ Box

For the past few years, mash-ups have been back in full force (though if you’ve ever enjoyed Girl Talk on a road trip, did they ever really go away?). Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s boredom, or maybe it’s the age-old desire to take one thing and smash it into another. In any case, KFC is gunning for the next cronut with “chizza”: marinara, cheese, and pepperoni on top of their fried chicken.

At the same time, KFC’s innovation is nothing new: on one hand, you could call it drive-thru chicken parmesan. On the other hand, fast food lovers have long enjoyed this hybrid snack at KFCs across southeast Asia, Spain, and Mexico. But brands love to do a silly little pop-up shop, and curious New Yorkers love to line up for them, so the fried chicken giant is introducing chizza to the American market by turning their Union Square location into a pizzeria— well, chizzeria.
