There’s a ‘Project Runway’ for Package Designers, and It’s Called ‘Pack It!’

Reality television has turned all kinds of professions into broadcasted competitions. From professional cooking to starting new businesses, producers have served up thrills, chills, and twists in a digestible format loaded with drama.

The Paper and Packaging Board is a self-funded program overseen by the US Department of Agriculture, an initiative charged with informing, educating, and promoting the use of paper-based packaging. One of the ways the Paper and Packaging Board is championing the use of the pulpy stuff for packaging is through Pack It!, a design competition program hosted by Nashville-based art teacher and social media influencer Cassie Stephens. The show presents designers with a challenge to create packaging out of paper for different kinds of businesses, like a meal kit or produce box, and follows the entire design process, from brief, ideation, prototyping, and presentation. You’ll even find functional testing, like dropping the box and inspecting the contents afterward.
