While a lot of cannabis packaging is cool on its own, some of it just doesn’t have the same rugged appeal as classic tobacco branding. Studio on Fire’s design for Dancing Goat Gardens not only taps into that vibe, but builds on it with luxurious gold foil accents, charming icons and illustrations throughout the packaging, and good ol’ serif. Yee haw!
Dancing Goat Gardens is a premier producer and seller of cannabis based in Havre, MT. They began production in 2018 and have since experienced exponential growth. The Dancing Goat Gardens team met the Studio On Fire team at MJBizCon in 2022. They visited our booth and were drawn to the intricate details on some pre-roll packaging we had produced as an internal promotional piece. Soon after, their team got in touch with us to begin pursing a pre-roll packaging project for their new Lil’ or Half Tokies pre-rolls.
Studio On Fire’s design team expertly crafted the artwork for Dancing Goat Garden’s new packaging lineup. To ensure their packaging stood out in the competitive cannabis market, Dancing Goat Gardens wanted artwork that highlighted our unique impression-based printing methods. The intricate designs were made by our in-house design team, which utilized letterpress, hot foil stamping, heated blind techniques, and made the most of the premium printing process.
Once the artwork was finalized, we were ready to move into production. Our production process always begins with our talented team of pre-press production artists. This highly specialized team prepares the artwork for proofing. This detailed and time-consuming process is the foundation for mastery of our unique printing techniques. Once the art files are ready for print, plates, cutting dies, and materials are ordered while the presses are prepped.
For Dancing Goat Gardens packaging, the printing process began with multiple passes through our letterpress department. Inks were hand mixed to custom match the specified Pantone (PMS). On top of the ink, metallic gold foil was hot stamped into the paper’s surface, adding bright contrast and a lux feel. Heated blind stipple texture was the last step on press before these were die-cut and run through our folder gluer. These sleeves plus a rigid tray fitted with a custom insert were assembled and shipped to Dancing Goat Gardens, ready to be filled with their Lil’ or Half Tokies pre-rolls.
For the shorter size of the Dancing Goat Gardens pre-rolls, the ‘Mini’ size of Craft Lock Box worked best. Craft Lock Box is Studio On Fire’s child-resistant packaging solution. It is fully recyclable, made entirely of paper, and designed and produced in-house in our studio in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. The unique, zero-plastic locking mechanism design is patented by Studio On Fire. While they didn’t need the locking mechanism of Craft Lock Box, the shape and feel of the structure, as well as the functionality of the telescoping rigid tray was the perfect solution for a team seeking a sustainable packaging option for pre-rolls.
Since Montana’s packaging regulations were not required to be child-resistant, we customized the Mini size Craft Lock Box structure to eliminate the locking mechanism for smooth opening with a premium look and feel.
Overall, Dancing Goat Garden’s packaging will now stand out on the shelf in a competitive, rapidly growing market. The combination of letterpress and foil stamping is stunning, and both types of printing are rare for the packaging in their industry, ensuring uniqueness. Our team looks forward to making more packaging for them in the future, and helping change what the average consumer thinks of when they hear “pre-roll packaging.”
